Labor Day & the end of summer...

Labor Day, signaling the end of summer, has arrived. Fr. Dennis sent us this lovely prayer for Labor Day:

For Every Man in his Work.

ALMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who declarest thy glory and showest forth thy handiwork in the heavens and in the earth; Deliver us, we beseech thee, in our several callings, from the service of mammon, that we may do the work which thou givest us to do, in truth, in beauty, and in righteousness, with singleness of heart as thy servants, and to the benefit of our fellow men; for the sake of him who came among us as one that serveth, thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Also Fr. Dennis has offered to come to St. Peter's the first and third Sunday of each month for Holy Communion Services (weather and health permitting)! Thank you so much Fr. Dennis! An answer to our prayers!

This past Sunday, Mike led our Morning Prayer Services. The sermon Mike chose discussed the parable of The Good Samaritan with particular emphasis on "true and laudable service" as described in Collect of the Day. An example from the sermon described a man who gave gloves to needy people in NYC's Bowery district. This generous man often received offers of gloves and money but always turned them down. He advised the potential donors to "not deprive yourself of the joy of giving" and to give the gloves out themselves. Thank you, Mike for leading the service!

Sue continues to lead our weekly prayer group meetings on Discord. Our next prayer group meeting is on Discord this Wednesday, September 9 at 11:15 am. Thank you so much Sue for taking the time each week to lead our prayers!

Next Sunday, September 13, Scott and Sue have arranged for the above Brass Quintet to play at our Morning Prayer Services!! The group will be a Quartet as one member can't attend but what an addition to our service. They will play the prelude, processional hymn, sermon hymn, recessional hymn, and postlude. Thank you so much Scott & Sue for this special treat!

Also as noted above, the Quintet is playing at Allandale Mansion on Saturday night. Scott sent the following information to me:

Live music returns to the region this fall as Symphony of the Mountains launches a unique season.  The Symphony Brass Quintet will present outdoor concerts September 12 at 6:00pm at the Allandale Mansion in Kingsport, TN and September 13 at 3:00pm at the Mountain Empire Community College Goodloe Center in Big Stone Gap, VA.  The quintet will play brass favorites of a variety of styles including music of J. S. Bach, Scott Joplin, Henry Mancini and “Variations on an Appalachian Round” by David Newell.

The concerts are free of charge.  Instead of an admission ticket, patrons will gain admission by wearing a mask.  In order to hold this concert safely and enable future concerts to be performed attendees must heed state and local requirements: do not come if sick or showing symptoms, wear a mask at all times and maintain distance between parties. To further maximize safety the performances will have no intermission and there will be no printed programs.

Enjoy the concert just as previous generations did as they gathered around the park gazebo listening to brass bands.  Chairs will be available placed in clusters around the lawn to maintain physical distancing. Sunday attendees are requested to email pro-art@uvawise.edu or call 276-376-4520 to reserve a spot on the lawn. Both sites have back-up locations nearby in case of rain. More information is available at the web site, www.symphonyofthemountains.org or by calling 423-392-8423.

Yesterday after services, several people expressed interest in attending the Saturday night concert. Please let me know if you are interested so we can arrange to meet, sit together in one of the clusters, and enjoy a beautiful evening out! ______________________

Fr. Dennis wrote the August article for 'The Wooded Place Living" Magazine. Thank you, Fr. Dennis for taking the time to write this beautiful article about the Virgin Mary.
