"But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbor?"
St. Luke 10:29

Fr. Yossi spoke about the Parable of the Good Samaritan in his sermon during our Holy Communion Service. This parable shows us that we are dead and cannot save ourselves no matter how many good works we do or how stringently we follow the Law. Our only hope is that someone has compassion for us, saves us, and shows us mercy when we deserve punishment. Jesus agrees with the lawyer that we could save ourselves by keeping the Law. The problem is that we cannot and do not keep the Law (neither does the lawyer). The priest and the Levite, heroes to the lawyer, represent the Law that the lawyer believes is the way into heaven, but neither of these "upstanding citizens" helps the injured man. The Samaritan, the one despised by those who would be justified by their own works, is the one who saves. Jesus is the Samaritan. Jesus willingly allowed himself to be despised, humiliated, tortured, and nailed to a cross to save us. By His death and resurrection, Jesus bound up our wounds, poured oil and wine on us. Jesus died for our sins and was raised for our justification. He continues this work by taking us to the inn, which is the Church. He gives us a double portion of forgiveness, The Word and Sacraments until He returns on the Last Day.
Thank you Fr. Yossi for the beautiful message and service. Thank you Mike for serving.
After services we enjoyed an amazing lunch of pasta dishes, Cesar's Salad, pineapple casserole, watermelon, oatmeal pecan crunch dessert, homemade brownies, and ice cream! Thank you Laurel, Lynn, Carol, and Claudia for all the delicious food

Every quarter St. Peter's supports a local charity - most recently Shades of Grace (aid for the homeless in Kingsport) and Hope House (aid to young, unwed mothers). We also have plans to support the Marines' Toys for Tots program leading up to Christmas. The Mission Committee chose to dedicate this September to supporting St. Peters with requests for kitchen and cleaning supplies. We will collect items from the lists below in the box downstairs or the basket in the Narthex through the month of September.
Thank you to everyone for your generous support of the local charities and St. Peter's!
